I'm impressed you managed to photograph Cicindela campestris in the wild.

They are not the hardest ones =)

There's a much rarer Cicindela sylvatica present less than half a mile away, on the National Rifle Association shooting range. It's off limits though, save for the few open days that they have each year.
As I remember from 2008, when I saw it there, it is much more wary and quick to escape!

I've tried to find it in the public heaths in the area, but no success so far.

C.sylvatica is indeed quite scarce nowadays. I've collected a couple of specimens at Studland Dorset - bare sand where pine trees grow, not on the dunes (which seem to be a mecca for naked performing homosexuals). C.maritima at Methyr Mawr, Glamorgan - it flies quite a long way each time but stays in the general bare sand area. C.germanica is very localised and I've never seen it fly, but it hardly ever stops running. It frequents very steep slumped clay cliffs with spares vegetation. The stretch from Eype's Mouth (nr Bridport) west to below Golden Cap is a place where you can generally find it. I helped a Polish friend collect a couple of adults and some larvae there a year or two ago.

I also actually managed to get a mugshot of campestris several years ago :)
